Common questions and tips from our work with Baltimore customers.
- What should I do right after a tire blows out?
- Keep a firm grip on the wheel and ease off the gas instead of braking hard. Let the car slow down, signal, and pull as far off the road as you safely can, ideally onto a flat, wide shoulder or into a lot. Turn on your hazard lights. Stay away from traffic while you wait, and call with your location and which tire failed.
- Is it safe to drive on a flat tire?
- Only as far as it takes to get off the road safely. Driving on a flat crushes the sidewall, can bend or crack the wheel, and makes steering and braking less predictable. A tire that might have been patched often has to be replaced after it is driven on flat. Pull over, stop, and have the tire changed where the car sits.
Tip
Know what tire information to have ready
The tire size is printed on the sidewall in a format like 225/65R17. Read it off before you call, or check the sticker inside the driver door jamb. Mention whether your car has locking lug nuts, and if so, where the key is, usually in the glove box or trunk. This helps the right tire and tools come to you.
Tip
Check your spare before you need it
Many spares sit untouched for years and lose air. Check the spare's pressure a few times a year when you check your other tires. If your car has a compact spare, remember it is a temporary tire meant for limited speed and distance. Plan to replace it with a full-size tire soon after it goes on.
